The sinking of a 1,500-ton Cambodian freighter off Ulsan on Wednesday was caused by collision with an 88,600-ton container ship built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Coast Guard in Ulsan said on Thursday.
Of the 12 Russian sailors aboard the freighter Alexandria, Coast Guard ships rescued one and recovered four bodies. Seven are still missing.
The container ship collided with the Alexandria at around 6 a.m. Wednesday 30 km off the shipyard while undergoing tests. The freighter was torn apart in the accident, with the stern sunk and the bow remaining afloat.
Hopes of finding any more survivors are fading fast as most of the sailors were at the stern when the freighter was torn apart.
