Heartthrob Hyun Bin is at the pinnacle of his acting career. He currently appears in the hit TV drama "Secret Garden" where he brings both tears and smiles to his legions of fans. Now he has applied to join the Marines. He took the physical and was interviewed late last year.

When celebrities enter the military, they are usually dispatched to the public relations division and act in military propaganda films. But Hyun opted not to take that path and applied instead as a combat soldier in the Marines, a branch of the military notorious for its tough training and discipline. When asked by a recruiter why he wanted to join the Marines when he could serve comfortably as part of the PR division, Hyun was quoted as saying he wanted to serve the same way other people do. He has always told friends that he wanted to take pride in serving in the military.

Two marines died and 16 were injured during North Korea's artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island. That spread the word that serving in the Marines is not only tough but dangerous as well. But a picture released just after the attack where one marine braved the North Korean shelling to fire back at the enemy through a K-9 howitzer left an indelible mark in the minds of many South Koreans. After that incident, young men lined up to join the Marines, almost doubling the competition to 4-to-1. Hyun has joined the ranks of these passionate young men.

Too many celebrities, athletes and sons of wealthy families have dislocated their shoulders on purpose or even pulled out their teeth to avoid the draft. Many politicians and senior government officials also avoided the draft. Hyun not only dazzles with his acting but impresses with his character.

When Elvis Presley joined the U.S. military in 1957, he refused to be assigned to a performing troupe. He underwent the same training as any other recruit and was stationed at a U.S. military base in West Germany. A U.S. Army document of the time said many young Americans would emulate his action. Hyun is a bona fide star. And it is uplifting to picture all the young men who will line up to emulate him.
