Korea on Thursday formed a unit of police officers that will be deployed to join the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.

The 27 police officers will carry out missions including teaching martial arts to the local police as well as guarding the area.

Korea has been dispatching peacekeeping troops to provide humanitarian aid in the war-torn country since October 2009.

Small groups of police officers have been sent to Afghanistan in the past, but this will be the first time a full unit will perform an overseas peacekeeping mission.
