The average annual starting salary for college graduates this year is about W33 million, up 5.2 percent from W31.38 million last year, according to a survey (US$1=W1,126). A job portal gave the figure on Monday based on a survey of 201 of the nation's top 500 companies.
Shipbuilders and heavy industry pay new recruits the highest salary at W43.33 million, according to the survey. Next are financial companies (W36.18 million), machinery and steel makers (W34.16 million), and petrochemical firms (W33.83 million).
The lowest-paying sectors are IT and communications at W28.8 million. Other relatively low-paying fields are electric and electronics (W30.50 million), food and hospitality (W31.45 million), carmakers (W31.54 million), and logistics and trading (W31.92 million).
But the starting salary in small and medium-sized firms is W21.75 million, over W10 million less than in large conglomerates.
