China said Tuesday that its Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will visit the United States next week to pave the way for President Hu Jintao's scheduled visit later in January.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry told reporters at a regular briefing that Yang will make the visit from Jan. 3 to 7 at the invitation of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
She said the foreign minister will prepare the way for Hu's visit on Jan. 19 and exchange views with Washington on bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern.
Beijing and Washington have had several trade disputes and they disagree about China's currency, which the U.S. says is undervalued.
The two sides are also involved in efforts to defuse tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which have threatened to lead to an armed conflict.
