Social networking website Twitter announced on Monday that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the number one trending topic of the year, based on an analysis of 25 billion messages or "tweets" sent this year.
The FIFA World Cup and the film "Inception" came in second and third. Rounding out the top 10 in order were: the Haiti earthquake, vuvuzela horns, Apple's iPad, Google's Android mobile operating system, pop star Justin Bieber, the film "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows," and Pulpo Paul, the German octopus who shot to fame for predicting the results of World Cup matches.
The trends were tracked by a computer program that recognizes the most talked about topics in tweets in real time, and reflect the most meaningful events for Twitter users throughout the year, the website said.
