The average Korean consumes more than three times the recommended level of sodium, according to a report by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Men are more likely to exceed the standard than women, intaking 3.8 times more sodium than the recommended amount, compared to 2.7 times for women.
The report shows that Koreans' tendency to eat high-sodium foods remains virtually unchanged compared to 12 years ago.
Experts attribute the high-sodium diet to salty Korean stews.
