The government has decided to make public the names of people who have owed W30 million or more in unpaid tax for at least two years, with the goal of improving tax collection efforts (US$1=W1,114).
At a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday, a revised local tax bill was approved that lowers the delinquency level for publicizing tax debtors from W100 million to W30 million.
The revision comes after some local authorities questioned the effectiveness of the current law, as the number of people with W100 million or more in overdue tax was relatively small.
