Paul the octopus, the sea creature who became famous by correctly predicting the outcome of all of Germany's 2010 World Cup matches, has died. The Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany says Paul died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday at the ripe old age -- for an octopus -- of two and a half.

Paul became more famous than some World Cup athletes earlier this year when he correctly picked the winner of all seven of Germany's matches by opening one of two boxes draped with team flags. He later became a perfect eight for eight when he picked Spain to win the finals over the Netherlands.

When the finals ended, Paul retreated back to the quiet life of leisure that only an octopus can appreciate.

The aquarium says it is considering giving Paul his own special burial plot adorned with a permanent shrine.
