Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese Vice President and presumptive next president Xi Jinping, is expected to distinguish herself from her predecessors if she becomes first lady.
Born in Shandong Province, she debuted as a singer at the age of 18 and is now one of the top Chinese folk singers. Engaged in various social activities, the 47-year old currently serves as art director of the People's Liberation Army's song and dance troupe.
Peng, who was hugely popular as a singer at the time, met her husband, nine years senior to her and then vice mayor of Xiamen, Fujian Province, in 1986. They married the following year. The couple have a daughter named Mingze who was admitted to Harvard University in September this year.
