BMW last month became the first foreign carmaker to sell over 2,000 units a month here. BMW Korea said Thursday it sold 2,130 vehicles in August, beating the previous record of 1,685 set in June by Mercedes-Benz.
BMW's cumulative sales for the first eight months of the year reached 10,240 cars, more than last year's total sales of 9,600. The figure does not include the sales of Mini, the company's compact car brand, which recorded some 400 units in August.
The 5-series sold over 1,000 units in August to become the first high-end import model to hit the 1,000 monthly sales mark. Among mid-sized cars, the Honda Accord achieved the milestone in July 2008 with sales of 1,103 units.
Korea was BMW's fifth largest market in terms of sales last month, after Germany, the U.S., China and Japan.
Foreign carmakers together sold more than 8,000 vehicles here last month, topping the previous record of 7,666 in July.
