GM Daewoo, the Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors, has unveiled an aggressive plan to broaden its lineup and expand its market presence.
GM Daewoo president Mike Arcamone said in a press conference Wednesday that the carmaker will introduce eight new models by August next year and boost its domestic market share into double digits this year.
The plan kicks off with the launch of the Alpheon luxury sedan, a localized version of GM's Buick LaCrosse, on Tuesday. Production of the seven-seater Orlando multi-purpose vehicle will get underway at its Gunsan plant in October for export early next year and sales in Korea in the first half.
The carmaker will import the Chevrolet Camaro sports car next year as part of its plan to introduce the Chevrolet brand to Korea. It will also release the Chevrolet Aveo RS concept car in 2011.
Other new models include upgraded versions of the Tosca mid-sized sedan, Lacetti Premier compact sedan and Winstorm sport utility vehicle, all of which will hit the market before the fall of next year.
"Of the eight new models, six will be produced in Korea," Arcamone said. He added that the company has no plan to launch the electric-powered Chevrolet Volt in Korea.
