What are the best activities for tourists in Seoul according to the city's foreign residents? The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization surveyed 500 foreigners living in Seoul on the city's top 20 cultural experiences.
Many Westerners love the exciting nightlife of Seoul, and the survey found that the Hongik University district is their most popular location, followed by Apgujeong-dong and Bukak Skyway.
The unique experience of Korean-style spas and saunas was chosen for the best health and wellness indulgence, while temple cuisine, medical checkups and hand acupuncture were also favorites.
Many people think bulgogi or barbecued beef is one of the most representative Korean foods, but galbi or grilled beef ribs surprisingly ranked first in the category of Korean cuisine. The survey found that samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), kalguksu (noodle soup), jeon (assorted pan-fried delicacies) and makgeolli (traditional rice liquor) and street food were also popular with foreigners.
Places popular with locals are gaining popularity with tourists as well, according to the survey results. Myeong-dong and Dongdaemun Market ranked first and second for shopping, followed by Yongsan Electronics Market, COEX Mall and Cheongdam-dong. Many respondents selected Samcheong-dong, Seonyudo Park and Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong as the best walking streets.
The Seoul city government has developed various themed tours based on the results, such as a Korean cuisine tour. Tours can be searched based on theme and time on the website of the Seoul Tourism Organization at www.miceseoul.com.
