Following a recent spate of suicides among celebrities, a report shows that suicide is the third leading cause of death for women in Korea.
According to Statistics Korea, around 19 out of every 100,000 women killed themselves in 2008, making suicide the No. 3 cause of death after brain and heart diseases. The suicide rate is the highest among OECD member nations.
Experts say that stiff competition in schools, a worsening unemployment rate and the growing responsibilities of working mothers are some of the main factors behind the high number of suicides.
The government plans to tackle the problem by opening more rehabilitation and counseling centers throughout the nation.
