LG Electronics plans to take on the international smartphone market with a raft of new models, including one to be released in the third quarter and 10 more by year's end. It is also working on an Android-powered tablet PC to challenge Apple's iPad and Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab. It said the devices will be grouped under the Optimus brand name to boost brand awareness.
In its ambitious plan announced on Monday, LG said it will release more than four smartphones in the domestic market in the second half, and its first smartphone targeting the global market, dubbed the Optimus One with Google, in the third quarter.
"The Optimus One with Google will be sold through mobile operators in 120 countries," said Ahn Seung-kwon, the head of the company's mobile phone business. "We're putting all our efforts into its development, and Android developers from Google have also pitched in."
LG intends to lead the market with the mid- to high-priced device in the U.S. and emerging markets such as Brazil, India, China and Southeastern Asian countries. The company also said it will introduce its Android-powered tablet PC in the fourth quarter.
Market watchers say the wave of devices indicates LG Electronics' ambitions to turn the tide of the burgeoning global smartphone market, currently dominated by Research In Motion, Apple and Samsung. Lee Dong-seop of SK Securities' research center said, "LG has the potential to be competitive in the market if it successfully loads its Optimus series with the newest version of Android."
