Kim Yun-a, a legendary figure on the underground music scene and lead singer of rock band Jaurim, released a new album at the end of April after six years of absence. It is her first solo album after marriage and childbirth.

Once again she wrote and produced all the songs on the album. After the marriage, Kim brought her studio into her house, writing songs whenever she had free time while her now 31-month-old son was sleeping. "I never worried that the stability marriage gives me would quench my passion for music," she says. "It's not daily life that makes a poet or musician, it's in the blood. I don't think changes to daily life matter that much. My problem is lack of time."

Kim has been married to former video jockey and dentist Kim Hyung-gyu for four years now. The news of her marriage came as a big shock to her fans. "I didn't know I would get married. My husband and I had known each other for a long time as friends. He said he wanted to get married as soon as he saw me. I didn't buy that, but my mind changed after we began a serious relationship," she recalls.

Kim's voice is chameleon-like in its many colors. "Singing is like acting for three minutes. You get immersed in the role that suits the song," she says. "All songs on this new album are autobiographical in that they are based on my own experience." She says she does not write songs to please the public, and has no ultimate musical goal.

"I don't write songs because I'determined to write them. I keep all of my senses open, and when musical ideas pop up, I go into the studio," she says. "I will continue to make music that betrays the fans musically. I know that this paradoxically pleases them." She aspires to remain as a pioneer and constantly explore new musical worlds. Kim is preparing for a solo concert in mid-July, but she already knows what she wants her next album to be like. "I want to make something much more dramatically sorrowful next time."
