The Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that vernacular names will no longer be used as the official titles of cultural properties, which will be as spelled out on the plaque.
Thus "Namdaemun" or South Gate will no longer be in official use for National Treasure no. 1, the Seoul Sungnyemun (or Gate of Exalted Ceremonies), and "Dongdaemun" or East Gate will not be used for the Seoul Heunginjimun (or Gate of Rising Benevolence).
Among other renamed treasures is the Jeonju Gaeksa or old government guest house in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, which changes to Jeonju Pungpaejigwan, meaning Jeonju is the origin of the Chosun Dynasty. Chosun's founding ruler Yi Seong-gye was born in the area.
