The geographical center of Seoul is the peak of Mt. Nam rather than downtown Gwanghwamun. The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday said by using a global positioning system it recently learned that the geographical center of Seoul lies at the peak of the mountain. It plans to install some kind of marker there to indicate this.
The site is about 200 m away from N Seoul Tower. The city said according to the GPS the heart of Seoul lies in the woods 200 m away from the tower, but due to the steepness of the hill and possibility of damaging the environment, it decided to replace the signpost near the skyscraper with the new marker.
Until now, "Kilometer Zero" at the crossroads in front of Gwanghwamun was known as the heart of Seoul, "but it was just installed in 1914 under the Japanese colonial occupation to mark the distance between Seoul and 18 provincial cities. It is not the center of Seoul," the city said.
