China has officially recognized a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun.
Beijing officially approved the memorial events for the first time ahead of a visit by Korean lawmakers to historical sites related to Ahn in China.
The Chinese government also temporarily closed off Harbin train station on Thursday where Ahn assassinated the first Japanese resident-general of Korea Hirobumi Ito in 1910, to allow anniversary ceremonies to be held there.
Korean lawmakers on Friday morning commemorated the anniversary of Ahn's death in the Lushun Prison in China where he was held captive and executed by the Japanese colonial government.
