Building Overseas Campuses to Get Easier for Universities

It will become easier for Korean universities to establish overseas campuses under a government plan to absorb demand for study abroad. An official on Tuesday said the government will lift restrictions for overseas campuses of universities within this month and is preparing to support not only educational institutions but other services such as medical, IT, and financial firms in branching out overseas.

Under the current law, the same regulations apply for establishing an overseas campus and a domestic one, and ban the use of tuition fees and donations to establish overseas campuses. No Korean university has an officially registered overseas branch.

The government also decided to assist exporting of e-learning educational service, remote diagnostic services, and contents industry using IT technology in order to promote the service sector.
