Makgeolli to Be Labeled for Quality

A quality certification system for makgeolli or Korean traditional rice wine will be introduced in August.

The agricultural ministry says makgeolli that meets quality standards will be labeled with a seal of approval granted by the government.

With the introduction of the system, all public institutions that purchase large quantities of makgeolli will be obligated to place quality-assured brands at the top of the list.

The certification system is expected to enhance the quality of the traditional drink as well as contribute to building consumer trust.

Makgeolli is gaining popularity inside and outside of the country, showing a consumption increase of about 40 percent on-year in 2009.
