El Nino Blamed for Heavy Snowfall Across Korea

      March 11, 2010 11:31

Korea saw unseasonally heavy snowfall on Wednesday. While there is often sporadic snowfall in March, heavy snow in most parts of the country is a rarity, the Korea Metrological Administration said.

According to KMA, 13.5 cm of snowfall was recorded in Seoul, the third highest for March following 31 cm in 1922 and 18.5 cm in 2004.

The KMA blames the El Nino phenomenon, where the sea temperature around the equator goes abnormally high and the earth's atmospheric circulation becomes very unstable.
