The number of Seoul citizens who used public transportation within the city last year was up 2.2 percent from 2006. The Seoul city government on Monday said, "Statistics about last year's total number of passengers of subways and buses show that the daily average number of public transportation users in the city increased by 220,000 from 10.19 million in 2006."
The ratio of public transportation to cars also increased to 63 percent in 2009, up 0.7 percent from 2006.
By means of transport, some 4.73 million people used subways per day on average, up from 4.532 million in 2006. The rise was due to the opening of subway line no. 9. An estimated 5.681 million citizens used buses in 2009, up 22,000 from 5.659 million in 2006.
The road traffic situation also improved. The average speed of road traffic increased by 1.1 km per hour to 24 km in 2009 from 22.9 km in 2006. The average speed in downtown areas improved by 11.1 percent from 14.4 km per hour to 16 km per hour during the same period.
