Kyobo Book Centre, the nation's largest bookseller, will close its main branch in Gwanghwamun for renovations from April to July.
Located on the basement floor of the Kyobo Life Insurance Building in Jongno, Seoul, the Gwanghwamun store opened in 1981 and has not had a full-scale renovation since the early 1990s.
"The Gwanghwamun store accounts for a large portion of our overall sales, so naturally we're concerned that sales will fall during the temporary closure. But we decided to renovate the store since it is more important that our customers have a comfortable reading environment," a Kyobo Book Center staffer said. The exact date when the store will close has not been decided yet.
