Half of the top 10 most purchased mobile handsets in the U.S. were made by LG and Samsung Electronics.

A report from market researcher Nielsen shows that amid increasing demand for smartphones, Apple's iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS together accounted for 4 percent of the 271-million-user U.S. cellphone market between January and October this year.

Research in Motion's 8300 BlackBerry series placed second with 3.7 percent, followed by Motorola's Razr V3 series which took up 2.3 percent.

Four LG models, meanwhile, held 6.4 percent of the market, with two models placing fourth and fifth. Samsung's Rant and two other LG models were also included on the top 10 cellphone list.
