A cargo aircraft carrying North Korean weapons seized by the Thai government on Dec. 12 was bound for the Middle East, a senior U.S. intelligence officer claimed Friday.
Dennis Blair, the director of National Intelligence, wrote in the Washington Post, "Teamwork among different agencies in the United States and partners abroad just last week led to the interdiction of a Middle East-bound cargo of North Korean weapons."
Blair did not specify which country the North Korean weapons were bound for. His comment sparked speculation that the North Korean weapons were headed to Iran.
Blair's comment was the first statement by a U.S. government official since the arms were seized at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok. He also said the U.S. played some role in the process of seizing the weapons. "Improved cooperation among the country's 16 intelligence agencies" also contributed to seizing the North Korean weapons, Blair claimed.
