Fifty years after entering the field of nuclear technology Korea has finally succeeded in exporting its first nuclear plant.
The science ministry said on Friday that the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute and Daewoo Engineering & Construction won a bid to build Jordan's first atomic research reactor, after competing with Argentina, China and Russia.
The Korean consortium has now become the priority negotiating partner of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission and will be building a five megawatt reactor designed for research and educational purposes by 2014 under a contract worth over US$170 million.
The government said this is expected to lay the groundwork for Korea to join Argentina and Russia as one of the world's top three atomic exporters.
