Chemical Castration of Child Sex Offenders Planned

The government and ruling Grand National Party on Wednesday agreed to eliminate the statute of limitations for sex crimes against children and raise the maximum jail term from the current 15 years to 30. The maximum jail term could be raised to 50 years in special circumstances.

The government and the ruling party also agreed to the so-called chemical castration of habitual child sex offenders.

Officials from eight government agencies and the GNP met at the National Assembly that day to work out a comprehensive plan to fight sex crimes against children which includes revising or drafting of 10 related laws by the end of this month.

The plan will let investigative agencies publish mug shots of violent child sex offenders even when investigation is underway, citing people's right to know and the need to prevent further crimes.

Also under the plan, personal details of convicted child sex offenders will be allowed to be published and courts will be discourage from commuting sentences for child sex offenders or putting them on probation by reason of intoxication.
