GM Daewoo to Move Some Production to U.S.

Some GM Daewoo models made in Korea for export to foreign markets will be produced in the U.S. from next year.

GM said Tuesday that the Lacetti Premier (Chevrolet Cruze in the U.S.) will be manufactured at its Lordstown plant in Ohio from April next year to be sold in North America from July. The compact is currently produced at GM Daewoo's Gunsan plant. Production volume in the U.S. is forecast at over 100,000 units next year alone.

According to GM, the Lordstown plant will begin producing other GM Daewoo models by 2011, including the Matiz Premier (Chevrolet Spark), currently produced at the Korean automaker's Changwon plant, and the MPV7 (Chevrolet Orlando), slated to be made at the Gunsan plant at the end of next year.

The move will allow GM to produce some 300,000 units of GM Daewoo's flagship models a year by 2012.

A total of 330,000 units of the Lacetti Premier, Matiz and Gentra X were shipped overseas in the first ten months of the year, accounting for 89 percent of GM Daewoo's total exports. The Korean unit of GM is expected to see a decrease in exports due to the planned relocation of production.
