Nearly 30 percent of Korean companies say they have been mired in a patent dispute in the last three years, a survey by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry of 1,001 firms suggests.
To help them tackle patent disputes, 21 percent said they need expert advice while 19 percent wanted a dispute settlement body. And 17 percent said that the availability of sufficient information is the most necessary.
Only 26 percent said they profited from patent disputes, like receiving of royalties for their technologies, but 59 percent said that they had suffered losses. This included more than 30 percent of the companies that won patent disputes but faced difficulties due to legal costs or missing an opportunity to invest.
Of the companies with patent dispute experience, large firms accounted for 31 percent while small and medium-sized companies made up 19 percent.
