Self-Employed Workers Eligible for Unemployment Benefits

A revised employment insurance bill is set to be introduced to allow self-employed individuals to receive unemployment benefits when they close their businesses.

The Ministry of Labor announced the amendment to expand benefits to small business owners as Korea's ratio of 32 percent self-employed workers in the labor force is double the OECD average of 16 percent.

The labor ministry said the revised bill will act as a social safety net for entrepreneurs whose business ventures have failed.
