Korea has been ranked the least generous among 22 rich countries in giving international development aid for a second year in a row. With a score of just 2.8 out of a possible 7.0, Korea came in last place in the Commitment to Development Index released Thursday by the Center for Global Development.
The Washington D.C.-based research institute has compiled the annual index since 2003. It rates 22 rich countries on how much they help poor countries by scoring them in seven policy areas: foreign aid, trade, investment, migration, environment, security, and technology. Korea was first included on the list last year when it was also ranked in last place.
Northern European countries topped the list this year, with Sweden in first place followed by Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. At the bottom, just above Korea, were Japan, Switzerland and Italy.
