Yonsei University Tops Donation List in 2008

Yonsei University received the most donations among private universities last year. According to documents submitted by the Korea Foundation for the Promotion of Private Schools and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to Grand National Party lawmaker Hwang Woo-yeo, a member of the National Assembly's Education, Science and Technology Committee, 190 private universities in Korea received around W485 billion (US$1=W1,169) in donations last year, with 11 receiving more than W10 billion.

Yonsei University received around W48.13 billion. Donations to Yonsei from businesses totaled around W29.66 billion, and from individuals around W12.34 billion, topping the list in both categories. In second place was Inha University with around W39.6 billion, followed by Korea University with W35.27 billion, Hongik University with W24.92 billion, Sungkyunkwan University with W17.32 billion and Catholic University of Korea with W16.78 billion.

In terms of donations from businesses, Korea University came second with around W13 billion, while Catholic University of Korea received around W12.1 billion. Kyunghee University received around W8.36 billion from businesses and Dongkuk University W3.47 billion.

In terms of private donations, Hongik University came second with W8.71 billion, followed by Sungkyunkwan University with W5.82 billion, Korea University with W5.33 billion and Chongshin University with W4.3 billion.
