Korea Hosts Prestigious Global Space Event

The International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the most prestigious space event in the world, opened on Monday in the city of Daejeon. Korea is the fourth Asian country to host the annual event.

The 60th IAC is based on the theme "Space for Sustainable Peace and Progress." The organizing committee is hoping to highlight Korea's space ambitions and to stimulate the country's space industry.

This year has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Astronomy and the latest IAC is the largest ever. About 3,000 people from space agencies, companies and research organizations from more than 70 countries are participating. More than 1,500 papers have been submitted to be presented at the conferences.

Among the main events at the congress is a technology exhibition where businesses can show off their projects and build relationships with one another. Over 150 international companies have brought models, including satellite and rocket components, to showcase at the exhibition.

This year Daejeon has also prepared a space festival for the general public, where people and especially children can experience virtual space exploration by trying out astronaut training courses.
