Propaganda About N.Korean Heir Apparent Surfaces

The Mainichi Shimbun on Monday published the full text of indoctrination materials hailing and praising North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's third son Jong-un. Part of this propaganda document, which the Japanese daily's Beijing Bureau says it obtained exclusively, was already published on Sept. 8.

The document describes Kim Jong-un as a "genius" of modern military science and technology. "Old military leaders hung their heads after reviewing an artillery operations plan (which Kim Jong-un formulated) when he began studies at Kim Il Sung Military University" in 2002.

According to the document, Kim has completed a three-year infantry officer course and a two-year research program at the university. He is known to have returned to North Korea in early 2001 after studying in Bern, Switzerland and entered the university in 2002.

The Mainichi speculates that the document is being used by the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces or the Ministry of State Security. Talk of the succession in North Korea has died down to some extent since North Korean no. 2 leader Kim Yong-nam denied the discussion on Sept. 10 and Kim Jong-il's health improved.

But experts say there is apparently no change in the designation of Jong-un as the successor. A diplomatic source in Tokyo said the document seemed to be real and "drawn up in preparation for the succession."
