92% of Stakeholders Support Korea-U.S. FTA

A survey conducted by the U.S. government shows more than 90 percent of stakeholders in the pending Korea-U.S. free trade agreement are in favor of the deal.

According to the Korea International Trade Association, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative took 318 comments from parties most affected by the FTA, 292 of which showed support for the trade deal. That is an approval rating of 91.8 percent.

The trade office explained that those who contributed to the survey included Koreans and Americans, mainly from business organizations, corporations and related personnel.

Among Korean participants, all but one were in favor of the treaty, creating a 99.3 percent support rating. Eighty-five percent of American participants responded favorably to the agreement, while nearly 11 percent opposed it and 4 percent said they want to see it revised.

The primary contributors on the Korean side included business organizations, namely the Korea International Trade Association and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and commercial and industrial associations such as the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, plus major firms like the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, LG Electronics and SK Group.

From the U.S., along with the American Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, Citi Group, IBM, Time Warner, Ford and Chrysler were among those who voiced their views. Some 30 Congressmen and the governor of Nebraska also filed their opinions.

Since the signing of the pact in 2007, the deal has been waiting for ratification in both parliaments. It has been slowed by opposition groups calling for a revision of the agreement.
