Samsung in Bid to Overcome Patent Dispute

Samsung Electronics have begun producing LCD panels using technologies other than those over which it is in patent disputes with Japan's Sharp.

A company spokesman said Sunday the new panels have improved brightness and response time, and "we started to use them to produce large 46 and 52 inch LCD TVs this month. We plan to produce all LCD TVs with the new panels by the end of the year."

Samsung and Sharp have been fighting over patents in the U.S., Japan and Korea since 2007. In June, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled in favor of Samsung in one of four patent infringement cases filed against Sharp, but it also released a preliminary ruling that Samsung violated four Sharp patents. The ITC will announce its final decision on Nov. 9.

The U.S. bans import of products that infringe patents, but industry insiders expect Samsung's new panels to give the firm an advantage over Sharp in the patent disputes.
