Hur Mi-jung won the Safeway Classic in the second playoff round of the LPGA Tour event in Oregon on Sunday.
Hur hit seven-under in the final third round, and with a score of 13-under 203 entered the playoffs against Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Michele Redman of the U.S. With a birdie in the second playoff hole Hur claimed her first LPGA title.
Hur's was the seventh LPGA title won by a Korean this season, and the 80th overall since Ku Ok-hee won the first in 1988. Including wins by Korean-Americans Pearl Sinn and Christina Kim, who won one and two, respectively, Koreans have accumulated 83 titles on the Tour.
Hur made her debut on the LPGA Tour this season after scaling the heights of the Korean amateur league. A member of the national team in 2005 and 2006, Hur won first place in both the individual and team events for two years in a row at the National Sports Festival.
She opted to skip a professional career in Korea and move straight to the LPGA, but struggled to stand out until Monday's victory. The 20-year-old golfer is 176 cm tall and with her long arms has a huge swing locus and fast club head speed.
