Koreans Choose 'Moonlight Sonata' as Favorite Classical Piece

Ever wonder which piece of classical music is Korea's favorite? In an online survey conducted by radio program KBS Classic FM, Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" ranked the highest with 4.7 percent of votes. It was followed by Johann Sebastian Bach's "Aria on the G String" (4.4 percent), Antonio Vivaldi's "Spring" from "The Four Seasons" (4.0 percent), Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 (3.9 percent), and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" (3.7 percent).

The favorite composer was Beethoven (29.5 percent), followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (23.4 percent), Bach (10.2 percent), Frederic Chopin (6.0 percent), and Franz Schubert (4.2 percent). The best-loved musical conductors were Chung Myung-whun, Herbert von Karajan and Kum Nan-sae. Koreans also admired violinist Sarah Chang, Chung Kyung-wha, cellist Chang Han-na and pianist Paik Kun-woo.

The survey was conducted in June among 6,413 Koreans aged 10 and older.
