Former President Kim Dae-jung died at 1:43 p.m. Tuesday at the age of 85, officials of Yonsei Severance Hospital in Seoul said.
The former president had been hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia since last month.
For many years at the forefront of the democracy movement, Kim became president in 1998. During his presidency until 2003, he introduced the so-called "Sunshine Policy" of engagement with North Korea that culminated in the first inter-Korean summit in 2000. For his efforts, Kim was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the same year.
