Divorce and remarriage among Korea's senior citizens are increasing rapidly. According to the National Statistical Office, the number of divorces among Koreans aged 65 or over in 2007 totaled 472 for women and 3,662 for men, 5.8 and 4.2 times greater than 10 years ago.
The number of remarriages among this population was 2,004 for men and 610 for women, 2.3 and 3.7 times more than a decade ago.
The biggest obstacles to remarriage among the elderly were objections from children with conflicting interests over inheritances and family registers, and the perceptions of other people.
