A fountain in front of the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin in Gwanghwamun Square is being inspected on Thursday.
Gwanghwamun Square will open to the public on Saturday after a year and three months of sprucing up at a cost of W44.5 billion (US$1=W1,237).
The Square features a 162 m long and 17.5 m wide flower carpet consisting of more than 200,000 flowers. The exact number, 224,537, represents the number of days from Oct. 28, 1394, the day when the Chosun Dynasty moved the capital city to Seoul, to the opening day of the square.
Lee Kwang-se of the infrastructure headquarters at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "We consulted examples in foreign countries like the Grand Place in Brussels but planted fresh flowers and decorated the garden with traditional dancheong design."
The flower carpet starts from the entrance of the square just across Gwanghwamun and ends just behind the statue of King Sejong. The statue will be erected on Hangul Day on Oct. 9, 250 meters behind the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Around the King Sejong statue will be a space for an exhibition displaying information about his life and achievements.
