When a statutory holiday occurs on a Saturday or Sunday, it should be made up on Friday or Monday, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance feels.
A senior ministry official on Thursday said, "If many statutory holidays fall on Saturdays or Sundays, households tend to engage in less consumption, which could affect business."
The ministry plans to discuss the proposal with the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the agency in charge of such matters, and announce the policy in September as part of a business rejuvenation plan.
But no substitute holiday for Saturdays will apply for workplaces with fewer than 20 staff which have not yet introduced the five-day week.
The U.S., Japan, the U.K. and Singapore are among countries where Monday is a paid day off if the bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
