Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk has recently succeeded in cloning a dog that took part in the search and rescue efforts in New York after the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001. According to BioArts International, the American company that sponsored the project, Hwang cloned five puppies from a German shepherd that helped to rescue the last survivor of the 9/11 tragedy.
Hwang attracted negative publicity in 2004 after falsely claiming he'd cloned human embryos to produce stem cells. Since then he has been cloning dogs with the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Korea and BioArts International in the U.S. state of California.
