American Billionaires Gather to Discuss Slump

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, financier George Soros, CNN founder Ted Turner, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and financier Peter Peterson gathered at 3 pm on May 5 at the invitation of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and David Rockefeller.

The billionaires at the exclusive gathering have combined fortunes of some US$120 billion and have donated up to $72.5 billion since 1996, according to NBC.

They discussed how to address the global slump and expand their charitable activities in the downturn. Patricia Stonesifer, a spokeswoman for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said the group discussed all of their concerns without specific agendas.

Most had met in the past, but this was the first time all of them gathered together, according to the New York Times.
