Most sex crimes occur in Seoul and vicinity, data from the office of a Grand National Party lawmaker show. The Chosun Ilbo studied sex crimes in the jurisdiction of 239 police stations over the past three years.
Most occurred in the jurisdiction of Gwanak Police Station in Seoul with 808 cases, followed by Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province (737 cases), Bupyeong in Incheon (655 cases), and Guro in Seoul (654 cases). These are mostly Seoul outskirts or satellite cities with large floating populations and booming entertainment districts.
Kwack Dae-gyung, a professor of police administration at Dongguk University, said crime in general is high in these areas.
But Seoul's Jung-gu, which has the smallest population among the total of Seoul's 25 districts, overwhelmed the other districts with a ratio of 1,321 cases per 100,000 women. Lee Yoon-ho, another professor of police administration at Dongguk University, pointed out that Jung-gu is jam-packed with bars and other entertainment clubs frequented by a large floating population.
Most sex crimes happened in alleys or parking lots (10,879 or 17.9 percent), followed by motels or saunas (10,867 cases or 17.9 percent), single-family houses (9,887 cases or 16.3 percent), townhouses or apartments (6,874 cases or 11.3 percent), and bars or entertainment clubs (3,850 cases or 6.3 percent).
Some 2,041 sex crimes, or 3.4 percent, took place in subway cars in metropolitan areas such as Seoul, Busan and Daegu.
