Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is seeking to launch a new line of MIDs or mobile Internet devices, early next year. Typical MIDs are smartphone-like Internet devices but with more PC functionality. The new line of products will be created with Korea's LG Electronics.
Infraware, a Korean developer of mobile web browsers and SK Telecom will also be collaborating with Intel. Intel's global investment organization Intel Capital has invested US$5 million into Infraware.
Those in the business can expect the competition to heat up as Intel is not the only chip maker that is expecting MIDs to take off next year. Qualcomm as well as PC makers like Dell are also entering the next-generation cell phone market by developing new products for netbooks and smartphones.
