Sorenstam Committed to Designing Golf Courses in China

Retired Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam will design a golf course in China in cooperation with Korean and Chinese businessmen. She signed a contract for the project at the Chateau Laffitte Hotel in Beijing on Monday.

The prospective course is near the Chateau Laffitte Hotel in Changping, Beijing and a 20-minute drive from Wangjing, where a Korean community has formed. The Chateau Laffitte golf course will boast high-end facilities exclusively open to VIPs with a membership fee that ranges from 2 million yuan (W400 million, US$1=W1,238) to 10 million yuan, which will be China's highest.

The retired golfer said that she will make it one of the world's top 100 prestigious golf courses. A chief director of the project said, "We have already embarked on the fundamental groundwork and the courses will open in May 2011. We will remodel the Chateau Laffitte Hotel into a golf clubhouse to make the most of its facilities, including 500 rooms and banquet halls that can accommodate 1,000 people, karaoke rooms and spas."
