Samsung Electronics applied for the most patents among foreign companies in China last year. The Korean Embassy in Beijing on Monday quoted a report by China's State Intellectual Property Office which said Samsung Electronics filed 2,799 patents, followed by Panasonic with 2,222 and Philips with 1,764. LG Electronics ranked fifth with 1,214.
Four Japanese companies including Sony at fourth, Toshiba at sixth and Toyota at eighth and three American companies -- IBM at seventh, GM at ninth and Qualcomm at 10th -- were in the top 10. In terms of countries Korea ranked fourth, filing 9,320 patents, behind Japan, the U.S. and Germany.
Out of the total 828,328 patents filed in China last year, foreign companies took up 13.4 percent. China has seen the number of patent applications and trademark registrations soar four-fold since 2002.
