Prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison term and a W690 million fine for Roh Gun-pyeong, the elder brother of former president Roh Moo-hyun in a W3 billion bribery case (US$1=W1,345). Roh Gun-pyeong is charged with taking the kickback for using his connections to influence the purchase of Sejong Securities by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.
During the final day of Roh's trial Monday, prosecutors said the nature of the offenses was grave since he took a huge sum of money in return for using his position as the president's elder brother. Prosecutors said the five-year term was justified since Roh continues to deny the charges. Roh has portrayed himself as a simple man from the countryside who helped out some people in need of assistance.
